Fibromyalgia is a tricky condition and an even harder game to master. There are no fair rules, no egg timer trickling away or cheat cards to give you a leg up, it’s a lawless land with little reprieve. There are no shortcuts and no guidebook; it’s just you struggling to keep your head above water in a sea of pain. There are many names for the system people with chronic pain use, most commonly “spoon theory”, but I like to call it the Pay to Play game. Every action has a reaction and fibromyalgia is no different, except that its reaction bites back hard. My whole life is a matter of proportion. One night equals three nights flare up (or more), one really gluttonous meal could equal hours of agony, one train journey equals a nasty flare up days later just when I think I’ve got away with it and one week of bad sleep could reap the consequences for months. I’m fortunate enough to have a lot of very understanding friends who keep coming back, despite my many cancellations and reschedulings, but I’ve also had a lot of people judge me. Either for “bailing” or “exaggerating” and once I was called out in front of an entire party because I was choosing to leave early and save myself a morning flare up. So, if you have a friend who has a chronic illness or disability, please exercise a little kindness. We don’t cancel because we want to; we do it to protect our bodies from further damage. We don’t take the lift because we’re lazy; we do it to prevent an even more painful future. We don’t leave early because we choose to; we have to do it to ease our symptoms. Every action we take has to be proactive and preventative. We play a very delicate game every day, and you will never fully understand the rules, so please try and be more empathetic if you’ve brushed off someone’s symptoms in the past. Finally posted a new blog entry about this! Link in bio ? Picture 1 = pain is easy to hide ?‍♀️ picture 2 = the consequences of pushing myself too hard. I could barely open my eyes due to pain. I paid big time for moving stuff too quickly. #Spoonie #SpoonTheory #FightLikeAWarrior #Fibromyalgia #Scleroderma #Disability #PayToPlay #ChronicIllness #ChronicCondition

I started this week discussing my history of disordered eating with my counsellor before I realised that it was #EatingDisorderAwarenessWeek thanks to @kittyunderhillx ‘s amazing post reminding us that people of any size can struggle with eating disorders. So, I wanted to share a little of my own experiences on the last day. Our image of someone with an eating disorder has been limited to skeletal young girls for far too long. That is not an accurate reflection of the scope of people who struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating. My own issues with food started at aged 12. During a very messy time in my life, I began reducing my food intake in order to find some semblance of control. The habit stuck and I wrecked my appetite (I still rarely feel properly hungry to this day) and I spent the next six years mostly eating one meal a day. My old habits still crop up when things in my life start to spin out of control but I have learned how to manage it. It’s important to remember that, according to Beat, there are roughly 1.6 million people struggling with eating disorders in the UK. There are many things we need to do to counteract this but here are just five very important ones: 1. Change our understanding of who can develop an eating disorder. ANYONE CAN, whether they are fat, slim, muscled, old, young or anything in between. 2. Educate medical professionals about the diverse range of people who can struggle with EDs. Especially as some fat people who have EDs are being encouraged to lose weight through their disorder!! 3. Call out every influencer and celebrity you see who promotes damaging weight loss products. We have to change our culture if we want to change our future and we can’t wait for celebrities to hold themselves responsible, because they won’t. 4. Call out your favourite magazines and websites who capitalise on their readers’ insecurities to sell weight loss as a solution for all life’s problems. 5. Reach out! Whether you know someone who is struggling or you are struggling yourself, talk to each other! No matter how insignificant you think the problem is, please check in!

“Posle devet meseci sam tehniku dovela do savršenstva.
